Coffee stains are all too common. Often they occur early in the morning when the coffee drinker is not yet even fully awake and more prone to clumsiness and spilling. One method of cleaning up coffee stains is to mix equal parts white vinegar and water and thoroughly rinse the area with the solution. Allow the mixture some time to set in, and rinse the site with water and blot it up with a paper towel or absorbent rag.

Another method is to mix a small amount of non-bleaching detergent with a sizable quantity of water. Then, follow the same procedure as listed with the vinegar and water mixture.

Many people prefer to use store bought spot cleaning brands that use active enzymes to facilitate the cleaning. These products are often very successful at cleaning out tough stains such as coffee stains because the active enzymes naturally break down and biodegrade the organic stain causing molecules. When purchasing a store bought stain remover product, it is generally advisable to shoot for a product that uses non-toxic ingredients, so it will be safe to use around pets and children. Non-toxic cleaning products are also less prone to damaging your carpeting or other fabrics.

Whichever coffee stain cleaning method you decide to utilize, always be sure to do a spot test with the cleaning solution you are going to use. Choose a remote location on your carpeting and apply a small amount of the mixture. If you see no change in coloration of the fabric after a few minutes, then the solution is safe to use.

Step away from the table and leave it alone.

Once it has cooled and completely hardened (you may as well wait until the party is over then deal with it) bring some of the left over party ice out of the freezer. Rub the ice over the wax until it becomes cold and very hard.

Now it is brittle and you should be able to use any of your plastic kitchen spatulas to pop the pieces of wax off of the surface and toss them away. Now put a little polish down and your end tables should look as good as new.

Water Stains

If you get water stains from someone inadvertently setting a cup on your end tables, it is not the end of the world. Once the offending glass has been removed, leave the table alone. Let it complete dry (often a day or so is good) then use mayonnaise and rub it into the water spot (make sure it is real mayonnaise, not something similar). The oils in the mayonnaise will re-nourish the wood and should remove the unsightly spots. It is important to do this lightly and sparingly. You don't want to leave any of the oily mayonnaise on your end tables or you could end up with oil spots to go with your old water spots.

A person gets depressed beyond belief and blows his brains out. The police arrive and begin to survey the scene. Anything of a porous nature has to be removed and bagged and taken to the dump and then to the bio-hazard section of the dump.

After everything is removed, remaining surfaces are treated with a disinfectant spray or cleaner in order to prepare the surfaces to be carpeted, re-drywalled, repainted, and used again.

After the trauma crew has done their job, basically gutting the space, the homeowner will have to hire out workers to do the work remaining to be done.

The cost for the trauma clean-up crew to come and do their job should be covered by your home owner's insurance policy because it is quite costly and does do a great deal of damage to the property. Expect the cost to be, at a minimum, around $13,000 for 18 hours. It runs about $600.00 an hour.

Because of the extreme sensitivity of this type of clean-up, it is not advised that the homeowners embark on this job themselves. It should be covered under the homeowner insurance policy as it is very extensive and very costly.

How Do I Know If I Have A Bed Bug Bite?

That is a great question! In fact, as questions go, that is one of the best. Why? It's because the answer is usually met with a blank stare and a shrug. The fact is that bed bug bites are hard to diagnose by sight, even for dermatologists.

The reason is that bed bug bites are indistinguishable from other insect bites. So if you think you are being attacked by bed bugs, here are some clues to help you know...

Do you have an infestation? Look for the clues; bed bugs will hide in folds and linings of the bed linens. Check the tufts and seams of mattresses too. Look for fecal matter (brown or red spots) on the linens.
Do you wake up with new bites? If you do, there is a good chance they are from bed bugs.
What does the bite look like? The symptom of the bed bug bite is very similar to other reactions. Bed bug bites can be little red bumps; some have a red dot or scab in the middle. The bite area may be inflamed or irritated, and a small white welt may appear at each bite. Some are large, others small, sometimes there in a line or circle. Try not to be alarmed if you find out you have a bed bug bite. Bed bugs are not known to carry diseases, even though allergic reactions are possible.

10 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Kitchen

The words "spring cleaning" can make the neatest person cringe. They mean more work. As if cleaning all year long wasn't enough. Spring cleaning is more than just cleaning...it is deep cleaning. Something that most people do not have time for all year long. Since my expertise is cooking, I have decided to focus on spring cleaning and dirt build up prevention tips for the kitchen....

Baking soda or club soda will clean and shine stainless steel sinks easily. Simply apply directly to surface and scrub a dub dub.

To Remove stubborn water spots from a stainless sink scrub with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol or vinegar.

To freshen up your "white" porcelain sinks, place paper towels across the bottom of your sink and saturate with bleach. Let sit over night and rinse.

After you've cleaned your refrigerator and freezer place an open box of baking soda in the back of each to help absorb odors for about a month.

A few drops vanilla extract on a piece of cotton placed in the refrigerator will also help eliminate odors.

Wipe refrigerator with vinegar after cleaning to help prevent mildew.

Change your refrigerator light bulbs...that way you never have to worry about them burning out during the year.

To clean baked-on food from a cooking pan, put a dryer sheet in the pan, fill with water, let sit overnight then sponge clean. The anti-static agents help weaken the bond between the food and the pan and the fabric softeners will soften the baked-on food.

To clean burnt or scorched pans, sprinkle pans liberally with baking soda, adding just enough water to moisten. Let stand over night.

To get those stubborn stains off of the inside of you microwave; spray liberally with two parts water and one part bleach, heat on high for 20 seconds and let stand for about an hour. The stains should come right off. For really stubborn stains heat for 30 seconds and let sit for 2 - 3 hours.

How to Get Rid of Grease Stains

Removing Grease and Butter Stains from Clothing

As usual, your first step should always be to check the care instructions for the article you will be cleaning and make sure that none of the following steps will damage it. If you're not sure, either test it out on a hidden area or take the article to the dry cleaners.

Grease Stain Removal from Fabrics

1. If the stain is old and has set, moisten it back up with a squirt of WD-40.

2. If the stain is fresh and there is a lot of grease or butter in the material, cover the area with a dry, absorbent material like cornmeal or cooking flour and gently rub it over the grease stain so it absorbs as much as possible from the fabric.

3. Apply a grease solvent directly to the stain. The solvent you choose for this step should be dependant on the size of the stain and the material that you're working with. Be careful not to destroy your fabric. Most laundry spot-treatment solutions contain grease solvents and are generally the safest way to go (follow the instructions on the bottle), but if you need something stronger you can also use industrial strength solvents such as goop or automotive grade hand cleaners (apply directly to the stain and gently work it in and let it sit).

4. If the stained fabric is a piece of clothing, run it through a wash cycle. If it's furniture then you can either clean the area using an upholstery shampooer or blot it dry with towels and re-clean with a spot cleaner.

Grease Stain Removal from Carpets

1. If it's an old stain, saturate it with WD-40 to bring it back into solution.

2. If you're facing a lot of grease or butter, first soak up the excess using cornmeal or flour (any absorbent particulate will work).

3. Use a spot cleaner that is safe for your carpet and also lists 'grease stains' on it's label. Follow the instructions.

4. Follow that up if needed with a carpet shampoo.

Don't break your back scrubbing baked-on grease from cookware - work smart, not hard:

1. Place all of the items you wish to clean inside of a large, strong garbage bag.

2. Pour ½ cup ammonia into the bag and tie it off tightly.

3. Place the bag outside overnight (at least 12 hours).

4. Remove the items from the bag and the stains will just wipe away! If you have a couple of tough spots, just repeat the process.

How to Remove Crazy Glue

When the new super bonding glues first came out, they were hailed as the best thing since sliced bread. Until someone got their hand stuck to the breadbox.

Super Glue is indeed great stuff, and certainly can create a secure bond. But when that bond is between your fingers and something else, or the glue is a puddle on your kitchen counter, a wet paper towel isn't going to get you very far, because it will be stuck to it, too.

If you're going to have a tube of Crazy Glue in the house, the smartest thing you can ever do is to buy the solvent at the same time. It's just the nature of Man, that sooner or later someone will have even a small accident that is only a drip or spot, but which could turn into a major problem if they can't get it cleaned up.

If you don't have the solvent, or don't know where to find it, here are a few tips you can try. Many emergency hotlines will recommend using vegetable oil for skin-to-skin bonding of fingers. This has mixed success.

Because the active ingredient in Crazy Glue and other super bonders is cyanoacrylics, what you really need is 100% acetone. While some fingernail polish does contain this, it's not usually in the strength needed to break the bond. However, for something like a spill or drops on a surface like a countertop, if you pour the nail polish on and let it sit for 15-30 minutes, it may do the trick. Otherwise, you should try a hardware store for the acetone.

Some users report successful removal with lighter fluid. Keep in mind though, that anything of a chemical nature can damage the item with the glue on it. Test a hidden or small area of material or surfaces with the glue on it, and wash hands immediately after having it removed from your skin.

How to Do Your Laundry More Quickly

Recent research has shown that every year mums spend a week per child doing laundry. Obviously washing clothes is a vital part of life which unfortunately will only increase as your family grows but wouldn't it be fantastic if you could substantially decrease the amount of time you spend doing laundry every week?

Research shows that by the time your child reaches its 18th birthday on average a mother will have spent five months doing laundry. The statistics were compiled by Ecozone in a survey of 4,400 mums.

The survey found that on average mothers spend two hours and 36 minutes per week per child doing laundry and with an extra 55minutes doing ironing this adds up to a mammoth 183 hours per year, per child! This equates to more than a week of laundry every year per child. For families with four children you could be spending up to a month every year sorting, folding and ironing. Just think of the fun you could be having instead of doing laundry.

In order to decrease the amount of time spent in the laundry room, here are some suggestions on how you can make your life easier and the laundry load go down more quickly:

1. Use anti-crease programmes where possible to reduce ironing - these work in a variety of different ways, from tumbling intermittently at the end of a programme to alternating the direction of the spin to stop clothes being pressed up against the sides. The centrifugal force used in a single direction spin cycle causes fabric to develop deep creases.

2. Retain a little moisture in tumble dried clothes to make ironing easier - this is particularly easy with a sensor tumble dryer as you can choose the dryness level you require. For example, cupboard dry would remove all traces of moisture so you can store clothes straight away without them becoming musty. On the other hand, iron dry means your clothes will retain a little moisture making creases easier to remove.

3. Use a refresh or steam refresh function (like that found on a Samsung Air Refresh WF8702RSW washing machine ) on slightly dirty clothes rather than running a full wash cycle - this will save time, energy and money!

4. Use sensor tumble dryer cycles so you don't over estimate the drying time - sensor tumble dryers are an asset because they allow your machine to judge when the cycle is done and your clothes are dry.

5. And finally, this might be a long shot but...train your kids to sort their own washing so you don't have to. Make it simple by using one basket for whites and another for coloureds.
