How to Get Rid of Grease Stains

Removing Grease and Butter Stains from Clothing

As usual, your first step should always be to check the care instructions for the article you will be cleaning and make sure that none of the following steps will damage it. If you're not sure, either test it out on a hidden area or take the article to the dry cleaners.

Grease Stain Removal from Fabrics

1. If the stain is old and has set, moisten it back up with a squirt of WD-40.

2. If the stain is fresh and there is a lot of grease or butter in the material, cover the area with a dry, absorbent material like cornmeal or cooking flour and gently rub it over the grease stain so it absorbs as much as possible from the fabric.

3. Apply a grease solvent directly to the stain. The solvent you choose for this step should be dependant on the size of the stain and the material that you're working with. Be careful not to destroy your fabric. Most laundry spot-treatment solutions contain grease solvents and are generally the safest way to go (follow the instructions on the bottle), but if you need something stronger you can also use industrial strength solvents such as goop or automotive grade hand cleaners (apply directly to the stain and gently work it in and let it sit).

4. If the stained fabric is a piece of clothing, run it through a wash cycle. If it's furniture then you can either clean the area using an upholstery shampooer or blot it dry with towels and re-clean with a spot cleaner.

Grease Stain Removal from Carpets

1. If it's an old stain, saturate it with WD-40 to bring it back into solution.

2. If you're facing a lot of grease or butter, first soak up the excess using cornmeal or flour (any absorbent particulate will work).

3. Use a spot cleaner that is safe for your carpet and also lists 'grease stains' on it's label. Follow the instructions.

4. Follow that up if needed with a carpet shampoo.

Grease Stain Removal from Cookware

Don't break your back scrubbing baked-on grease from cookware - work smart, not hard:

1. Place all of the items you wish to clean inside of a large, strong garbage bag.

2. Pour ½ cup ammonia into the bag and tie it off tightly.

3. Place the bag outside overnight (at least 12 hours).

4. Remove the items from the bag and the stains will just wipe away! If you have a couple of tough spots, just repeat the process.

How to Remove Crazy Glue

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When the new super bonding glues first came out, they were hailed as the best thing since sliced bread. Until someone got their hand stuck to the breadbox.

Super Glue is indeed great stuff, and certainly can create a secure bond. But when that bond is between your fingers and something else, or the glue is a puddle on your kitchen counter, a wet paper towel isn't going to get you very far, because it will be stuck to it, too.

If you're going to have a tube of Crazy Glue in the house, the smartest thing you can ever do is to buy the solvent at the same time. It's just the nature of Man, that sooner or later someone will have even a small accident that is only a drip or spot, but which could turn into a major problem if they can't get it cleaned up.

If you don't have the solvent, or don't know where to find it, here are a few tips you can try. Many emergency hotlines will recommend using vegetable oil for skin-to-skin bonding of fingers. This has mixed success.

Because the active ingredient in Crazy Glue and other super bonders is cyanoacrylics, what you really need is 100% acetone. While some fingernail polish does contain this, it's not usually in the strength needed to break the bond. However, for something like a spill or drops on a surface like a countertop, if you pour the nail polish on and let it sit for 15-30 minutes, it may do the trick. Otherwise, you should try a hardware store for the acetone.

Some users report successful removal with lighter fluid. Keep in mind though, that anything of a chemical nature can damage the item with the glue on it. Test a hidden or small area of material or surfaces with the glue on it, and wash hands immediately after having it removed from your skin.

How to Organize the Most Disorganized Rooms in Your Home

The average homeowner understands how to organize standard rooms in the home like the kitchen and family office. However, there are sometimes rooms in a home that are more unique, and these can be difficult to keep under control. Companies that make organizational goods focus primarily on the problems that the majority of homeowners have like keeping linens organized, setting up an organizational system for the kitchen, and keeping bills and family papers in order. Sometimes, where only a few homeowners need organization solutions; it can be tougher to find the right equipment and solutions. This is when homeowners need to get creative. If they are organizing a hobby room, they may need to repurpose some items to get the results they need. For instance, the musically inclined may need to use piano benches for storage, as well as using it for its regular piano bench purpose. You may need to use a regular piece of furniture as a sheet music cabinet, or you may be able to find something specifically designed for this purpose. Regardless of your needs, there is a probably a solution available if you think creatively.

For hobbyists who enjoy scrapbooking, there are a variety of organization materials available, but many of them are pricey. Instead of relying on the ready made furniture and organizers, consider browsing rummage sales and yard sales for items that can be repurposed for your craft room. This also gives you a chance to make the item fit in well with your other furniture without worrying about painting or refinishing a brand new cabinet. If you buy a used item, you can sand it down, add new knobs, and refinish it so it fits in perfectly with your style. You can even get creative and use bold, bright colors, or affix photographs to the actual storage device. This is a great way to add style to your craft room while also creating the storage you need.

Those with a unique lack of storage in the home may need to supplement with various items that allow for seasonal storage, storage of outdoor wear, and linen or food storage. Some older homes lack the luxury of a pantry or linen closet, so you will need to come up with a great solution for putting these items away. Consider buying shelving that is large enough to hold your bathroom and bedroom linens and placing a curtain over the front to act as a door. This gives you more shelving options, and also allows you to shop for used shelving which can be very inexpensive. You may also want to install shelves directly onto your wall and then create a pulley system that wraps the curtain around the shelves. This gives you plenty of options concerning the style of your storage system because you are essentially choosing a curtain for your room. You could even make a storage system like this match the current fabric choices in the space. It can be tough finding creative ways to organize your home, but it will be well worth it in the long run.

Maid Services Available For Taking Care Of Your Home

Many households are looking for help to keep their homes clean on a regular basis. Maid services can go a long way to adding a little peace of mind in regards to keeping the house clean. After working long hours, cleaning the house is usually not at the top of the list of things to do. A maid service can be contracted to come in and take care of everything.

There are all types of maid services that are available for the consumer. A simple service of one person can come in do basic housecleaning, or a service can be contracted that will literally bring a cleaning team into the house and do a deep clean. These are very effective as they will often have people that specialize in different areas of the home. These are some of the services that should be included in the service.

Vacuuming - while all service will vacuum, you want to make sure that they are vacuuming properly. This means not just a pass over the obvious areas, but that furniture should be moved and the area underneath it gets vacuumed as well. The furniture should also be vacuumed to avoid a dust build up in the fabric.

Windows - sometimes, this is not part of the service, especially outside windows. Talk to the service beforehand and makes sure that this topic is covered. If your windows tilt in, make sure that they are doing the outside of them as well as the inside.

General Cleaning - this should include things such as dusting, kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. However, there are things that you may want to make sure are included in this. For instance, the fridge and oven are areas that are usually neglected and then lead to a major cleaning project. Make sure that they are included in your weekly or monthly service.

Shopping and Cooking - these services are usually considered an upgrade and may not even be offered by your maid service. However, for busy couples, this service is a great advantage. The maid service will shop for the food and prepare it for the week. All that is needed is to either defrost the food or pop it in the microwave and dinner is served.

Pets - if you have pets, make sure that this is divulged to the cleaning service. People that have pets will usually require cleaning that is a little more detailed because of the pet hair that seems to get everywhere. You may also use specific deodorizers and allergy fabric sprays that will have to be applied at every visit.

Life can definitely be made easier by using a maid service for your cleaning and everyday chores. The Internet will provide a wealth of services, and from that point it is merely researching them and making sure that they are exactly what you are looking for. Instead of having to come home and roll up your sleeves, you will only have to pop dinner in the oven and put your feet up.

How to Do Your Laundry More Quickly

Recent research has shown that every year mums spend a week per child doing laundry. Obviously washing clothes is a vital part of life which unfortunately will only increase as your family grows but wouldn't it be fantastic if you could substantially decrease the amount of time you spend doing laundry every week?

Research shows that by the time your child reaches its 18th birthday on average a mother will have spent five months doing laundry. The statistics were compiled by Ecozone in a survey of 4,400 mums.

The survey found that on average mothers spend two hours and 36 minutes per week per child doing laundry and with an extra 55minutes doing ironing this adds up to a mammoth 183 hours per year, per child! This equates to more than a week of laundry every year per child. For families with four children you could be spending up to a month every year sorting, folding and ironing. Just think of the fun you could be having instead of doing laundry.

In order to decrease the amount of time spent in the laundry room, here are some suggestions on how you can make your life easier and the laundry load go down more quickly:

1. Use anti-crease programmes where possible to reduce ironing - these work in a variety of different ways, from tumbling intermittently at the end of a programme to alternating the direction of the spin to stop clothes being pressed up against the sides. The centrifugal force used in a single direction spin cycle causes fabric to develop deep creases.

2. Retain a little moisture in tumble dried clothes to make ironing easier - this is particularly easy with a sensor tumble dryer as you can choose the dryness level you require. For example, cupboard dry would remove all traces of moisture so you can store clothes straight away without them becoming musty. On the other hand, iron dry means your clothes will retain a little moisture making creases easier to remove.

3. Use a refresh or steam refresh function (like that found on a Samsung Air Refresh WF8702RSW washing machine ) on slightly dirty clothes rather than running a full wash cycle - this will save time, energy and money!

4. Use sensor tumble dryer cycles so you don't over estimate the drying time - sensor tumble dryers are an asset because they allow your machine to judge when the cycle is done and your clothes are dry.

5. And finally, this might be a long shot but...train your kids to sort their own washing so you don't have to. Make it simple by using one basket for whites and another for coloureds.

Best Customer Review : This is a great steamer. I used to have one of those E-steamers and it sucked!!! It broke on me and thank the good Lord because it forced me to get this one instead, and this one is much higher quality and it's a fraction of the price. The only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's obviously not as good as taking your clothes to the dry cleaner's, but almost!! I highly recommend it. Plus it's just very affordable and saves you money as well. I use this steamer on my clothes every morning. It's nice!

Customer Review 1 : disappointed - S. Hepting -
I was hoping a steamer would be like an iron, but it isn't. It will make a wrinkled garment wearable, but it will never be crisp like an ironed one. Seems to work best if clothing is steamed against a wall or other surface. Also, it looks best if allowed to cool and dry on a hanger.

Customer Review 2 : It works, but it's not the best thing ever - M. Studart - New York
It works well, like it will get rid of the wrinkles, but you have to position it correctly orelse it will wet your clothes with the hot steam. My cousin tried it and it wet his shirt, but when I used it, it just got rid of the wrinkles.

Customer Review 3 : Small, but powerful - Elizabeth Chin - burke, va
This steamer works well for its size. I only wish it was a bit bigger!

A Cursory Look at the Ways of Cleaning Blinds, Drapes and Curtains

The various types of window treatments will always involve vacuuming. This is an important aspect of the task since it is important that windows are kept free of cobwebs and dusts. Home cleaning and maintenance specialists strongly recommend that the procedure be performed at least once a year.

When it comes to cleaning of blinds, drapes and curtains, you will have to consider the two levels of the decision making process. The primary decision that you will have to make is whether you are going to perform the home maintenance task yourself or hire the services of a professional window cleaner. Once you have decided on how you are going to approach the task, the next thing that you must decide on is the appropriate cleaning procedure that is suited for your home.

There are several issues that you need to resolve if you are going to perform the window cleaning yourself. What are the things that you are going to do when cleaning the window? What are the tools that you must use in cleaning the window?

Even if you are not going to hire the services of a professional, it is still imperative that you learn how professional perform the task. The various cleaning approaches are focused methods that address specific cleaning concerns. For instance, your choice of technique will be determined by the type of material involved. You will also have to take into account the type of stains and smudges that are involved. While some people may be overwhelmed by the nature of the task, a strict adherence to the best practices will significantly help you go through the window cleaning without any major hassles or snags.

You should be able to pull through without much problem whether the window treatment involves, sheer curtains, drapes or blinds. As long as you follow the tried and tested techniques in performing specific window treatment task, you will be able to complete the task with flying colors.

Regular Cleaning - Just like with the other house chores, the more time you allow to pass, the more difficult the work becomes. One way to avoid these complications is to perform regular cleaning of blinds, sheer curtains and drapes. You have to make window cleaning as part of your weekly or monthly chore list. Spend sufficient amount of your time cleaning the inside part as well as the inside part of the window. In this way, you will not need to clean the blinds, sheer curtains and blinds more often than you should.

Washing of Curtains

In most instances, you will have to remove or pull down the sheer curtains. The proper way of cleaning them is by machine washing. However, sheer curtains made from delicate fabrics may have to be washed by hand. As a general rule, you first have to read the labels and follow the washing instructions. Don't spin dry sheer curtains that are made from pure cotton. It is best that this type of curtains is hung dry on clothing racks made out of wood.

Cleaning of Drapes

Drapes are usually made of heavy fabric material than sheer curtains, and machine washing is not usually viable. However, you have to check the label for the right cleaning procedure. Most drapes need dry cleaning. Before you pull down the drapes, it is essential that the drapes go through an extensive vacuuming.

Cleaning the Mini-Blinds

There are significant number of homeowners who find the task more difficult and frustrating compared to the cleaning procedure applied on drapes and sheer curtain. Regular vacuuming using a duster attached to your vacuuming machine is one of the more popularly approaches.

How to Get Rid of Fabric Stains

The opposite is equally true in that you can make everything dirty without making anything clean. Scientific and philosophical ruminations aside, the two basic ways of removing fabric stains, or rather, of moving certain molecules from one resting place to another resting place, are bleaching and dissolving the stain.

The common spots and fabric stains below need not become insurmountable blots. Follow these simple tips to get rid of them completely and permanently.

General Fabric Stain Removal Tips

* Soap and water will get fabric stains out. Most fabric manufacturers recommend using a mixture of soap and water and then spreading lightly (not pouring) it over the affected area. Scrub thoroughly and then dab dry with an absorbent towel. Make sure you dry it as thoroughly as possible.

* Steam cleaning will remove fabric stains. If soap and water don't work, try renting a powerful steam cleaner with a hand-held attachment. Whatever you do, don't use harsh chemicals and make sure you do your best to dry the area you've cleaned. An absorbent powder like baking soda probably wouldn't hurt.

* Dry cleaning; reserve it only as a last resort, but it's a very viable choice for fabric stain removal.

* Keep a special spot and stain remover kit handy. The kit should contain a clean white terry cloth, a white absorbent cloth to see if the stain is coming out, dish washing detergent, disinfectant solution, household ammonia, white vinegar, dry cleaning fluid, bleach, odor eliminator, CLR, hydrogen peroxide, non-oily nail polish remover, acetone, a mop, sponges and a bucket.

You also need a spotting brush, putty knife and a scraper. You will be able to find other products that can make your job easier and work better the more you start removing spots and stains on a regular basis. You will get to use this stain removing kit on specific stains in the next column.

Specific Fabric Stain Removal Tips

* Alcohol stains need to be blotted. After blotting, use a sponge and water on the spot. Next, apply a sponge with vinegar, blot the stain again, and rinse the area thoroughly. You might need to use bleach and hydrogen peroxide if nothing else works.

* Scrape a bloodstain all you can at first. The next step is to blot it with cool water. If there is still a residual stain, blot it with ammonia and rinse well. Use hydrogen peroxide if nothing else works.

* Candle wax can be scraped off with a scraper. Then apply a clean cloth over the spot and take a warm iron to melt and absorb the wax into the cloth. Use dry cleaning fluid to pick up the remaining residue.

* Chocolate stains needs to be scraped first as well, and sponged with dry cleaning fluid. Sponge the spot with detergent solution, blot, and rinse. Use a correct bleach solution or hydrogen peroxide if nothing else takes it out. Blot coffee with detergent solution and then rinse the area. Blot it with vinegar, rinse carefully, and air dry.

* To remove ink stains, sponge them with detergent solution and then rinse thoroughly. If the stain remains, saturate it with cheap hair spray and blot the area. Or try alcohol, acetone, or non-oily nail polish remover and bleach that are safe for fabric, in that order.

* Dry brush mildew on the surface as best you can. Sponge it cautiously with disinfectant solution and blot. Sponge it next with ammonia and rinse. Attack the stain with chlorine bleach if it is safe for fabric; if not, use hydrogen peroxide.

* Mustard and ketchup stains should be scraped and blotted to remove as much as you can. Sponge these stains with detergent solution, then with vinegar or bleach, and rinse.

Remember, if bleaching is going to make the stain disappear, it is going to bring that about within fifteen minutes. Do not bleach a garment for longer than that, for it will make the fabric weak. Color removers are also available, but they tend to remove some of the color from the fabric itself as well.

Upholstery Cleaning in Boston

Most professionals in the field of upholstery cleaning in Boston will clean just about any type of fabric. Most will also be equipped to do the work in your own home. They will remove any loose dirt with a heavy-duty industrial vacuum including the pillows and the back of the specific piece as well. Another important task they perform is to treat the areas of the upholstery that come in contact with body oils with a solution that helps clean the fabric. In addition, the solution will help to disinfect and clean at the same time.

When you purchase your furniture find out from the retailer what they recommend is the best way to clean the item. In addition, check any written material that comes with the piece. Alternatively, you could contact the manufacturer directly. If it fits in your budget, you can certainly trust your upholstery cleaning in Boston to the professionals. They know what to do regardless of whether the fabric is leather, vinyl or any type of cloth.

One tip many consumers are not aware of is that when they purchase a new piece of furniture ask for a swatch or piece of fabric in order to do any color testing with your cleaners. This way you will not have to test anything on the actual piece of furniture. Upholstery cleaning Boston pros recommend this important tip to all buyers of new furniture. Use a mild dish detergent that does not contain any bleach. Dilute with warm water and gently rub the stain with a soft bristled brush. Blot any excess cleaning solution with a soft towel or paper towel. Drying the area with a hair dryer can speed up the drying process. The longer the piece stays wet or damp the higher the chance for mold or mildew to grow.

The upholstery cleaning Boston professionals come across many vinyl covered furniture while doing business. It is important to use the right chemical on this type of fabric. Some of the chemicals can cause the vinyl to harden which will ruin it completely. The same goes for leather upholstery. These things are best left to the professional cleaner. If you use the wrong cleaning solution then you could permanently damage your furniture, and leather is not cheap.

There are ways that you can enliven your old upholstery. The upholstery cleaning Boston people recommend this little home remedy. Take three quarters of a cup of baking soda and two tablespoons of cornstarch and a small amount of baby powder. Apply a good amount and then vacuum it all up. A good trick to remove gum is to use ice to freeze it and then try to break it off with a butter knife or something that will not scratch the surface of the upholstery.

Tips to Maintain Health and Hygiene

House cleaning is very important in order to maintain a person's health and hygiene. Cleaning tools do not just include brooms and mops; there are many other specialized tools in the market as well. Improved dusting cloths are available in many varieties, depending upon the type of fabric used. Some of them have enough absorption power to hold a large quantity of water and other liquids. Generally these dusting rags are made of terry cotton or a synthetic fiber. Another indispensable tool is the ordinary vacuum cleaner. It is especially recommend for the cleaning of all floors in your home that happen to be carpeted. Soft bristle brushes are an invaluable tool that can be used to easily and efficiently remove any of the dirt that usually sticks to the corners of cabinets, furniture or walls.

Kitchen cleaning is the most time consuming task. However, if you carefully plan the cleaning process, and gather all the tools that might be needed, it will become a whole lot easier. Always totally empty the refrigerator before starting to clean it: never try to strategically clean around items. This so called "shortcut" is in reality much harder. A solution of a mild dish washing soap and water or baking soda will quickly remove any unwanted soil from the inside surface. Paper towels are a wonderful tool for drying all of the moisture that is remaining.

Every bathroom needs to be routinely sanitized. There are many different disinfecting solutions that can be selected from the shelves of most grocery stores. The toilet bowls should always be scrubbed with a toilet cleaning brush. Disposable sanitizing wipes can be used to quickly clean the outside of this fixture; along with the sink and bathtub.

How to Clean Patio Cushions

Taking care of your patio cushions means they will last longer and look better too. Check the care instructions if you still have them but if not most outdoor cushions can be cleaned with the following few steps. If you're unsure then test this on an unseen part of one cushion (such as the underside) to make sure you're happy with the results. Wear protective gloves to avoid cleaning solutions irritating hands.

Cleaning a Cushion (Dirt spots and General Grubbiness)

Add a few capfuls of mild detergent to a bucket of warm water and froth up to form soap suds. Dip a sponge in the water and gently scrub the cushions especially those parts of the cushions which are particularly dirty. Rinse the cushions with clean water but avoid getting them too wet as this will facilitate drying. Allow the cushions to dry by laying them out in the sun (turn them to make sure that both sides are dry) or in a warm room. Cushions need to be thoroughly dried before they are replaced on furniture or put into storage to prevent mold and mildew.
Cleaning a Patio Cushion which has become Mildewed

If cushions have already become damaged by mildew, then create a solution of 1 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent to 1 quart of warm water and add 1 teaspoon of borax. Soak the cushions on both sides with the solution (it will need to penetrate to kill the spores). Let the solution soak in for 15 minutes then gently scrub any particularly dirty areas. Rinse the cushions- you can use a garden hose if necessary to rinse the cushions of all the cleaning solution and dry thoroughly.
Protect Your Cushions from Getting Dirty

If the protective coating on cushions is wearing off (or they did not have one in the first place) then you can give your patio cushions a spray on all sides with fabric protector such as Scotch Guard. Follow instructions on the spray can before use and be sure to test on an unseen area.

Be Especially Careful with Sun Cream

Take care when using your patio cushions not to allow sun cream or oil soak into the material. This can be very damaging to the fabric and is difficult to clean. Wipe off right away if you notice sun tan lotion on the fabric or treat with a commercial fabric stain remover.

Two Ways To Kill Carpet Mold and Prevent it From Coming Back

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Carpet Mold is all around us and the first sign is the musty odor. If you are suffering from asthma and musty odors you may be susceptible to mold growing in your carpet and will need a clear way to kill mold in carpeting.

In order to effectively kill mildew in carpeting, you will need to follow the correct remediation guidelines. These mold remediation. guidelines should be followed strictly because mildew can occasionally be liberated into the air. The problem from carpeting that causes mold is because either moisture or some dampness has been allotted on the carpeting. At times when you hire carpet cleaners and they use water or other moisture cleaning products, you can have problems. Most problems in carpeting is caused from excess water or flooding that happens from sinks, showers, and other water sources. Many times you will discover that there are black spotting on the carpeting.

This is most likely from the spores growing on the surface of the carpet fibres. In order to kill mold in carpet, you have two options. The first option is to remove the moldy carpet entirely. The second option is to use a natural cleaning product that will take out the mold enzymes. Removing the moldy carpet is usually in the category of mold remediation. You want to be sure when removing carpeting that you follow all the remediation guidelines. At times spores can be liberated into the air because of the shaking and removing of the carpeting. This can cause a larger problem due to the spores liberating into the A.C. system and throughout the house.

In order to correctly and efficiently remove mildew it is recommended to have a natural cleaning product that kills and also prevents spores from coming back. You want to make sure that the product is a solid solution that does not have harsh chemicals, bleach, or acid. The bleach, acid, and harsh chemicals will not only destroy the carpeting, but will also destroy the inside of your lungs. There are natural cleaning products available that remove black mold and also encapsulate the mold area . These natural cleaners will remove staining so you carpeting will look fresh and clean and have no issues. It is important to attack the source of the problem and also use a strong natural cleaning product so the critters does not come back.

The trick to kill carpet mold is not only killing it but also preventing it entirely from growing back.

The trick is, with carpeting, you keep it dry if possible. When dealing with moldy carpets, it is a tough situation to handle. Most times, when a carpet is wet, or cleaned excessively, the carpet fibers are damages. At times, you can remediate the problem by removing the carpeting, or simply using effective natural cleaning products. Cleaning products, which will not damage the carpeting, and your home and yourself, are the most effective to use. Mildew has a case to come back, when cleaned with bleach or any other cleaning agent, will grow back because the spores are not destroyed entirely. The trick is to use a cleaning agent, or a green cleaning product that will remove the spores entirely. And then also block and prevent any future mold amplification. Carpeting is always a judgmental problem. Many cases in mold remediation, the carpeting is sometimes remove due to the excess water damage. When you have a carpet of large amounts of water stains, and there is musty odor, it is usually time to use a powerful cleaning product, or remove the carpeting entirely.

"If you remove the carpeting entirely, be sure to remove the tack strips below the carpeting as well."

There will be mildew on the wooden tack strips as well. If you start smelling musty odors above the carpeting area, that means that you have black mold and mildew growing inside your home. You do not have to remove carpeting, there is always other solutions. You can use natural cleaning products that will remove and prevent, but be sure to use the correct ones that will not damage carpeting. Green products are usually the best case because of the natural ingredients that can kill mold effectively. But do not forget to prevent from future growth of the mold. Many green cleaning products will clean the area, but will not prevent mold and mildew.

In order to prevent mold and mildew, there are numerous products out there which you can look for, such as safe shield, and other molderizer products. Your best bet is to effectively use these products and find the source of the problem. If you do not find the source of the problem, your mold problem will come back guaranteed no matter what product you use. Always find a easier solution when dealing with black mold. Mold remediation is costly and resource intensive. Sometimes it is necessary, but always try to find a simple solution before investing your time and money into a larger issue. Seek professional advise, and always talk to a mold remediation expert, or use natural cleaning products.

Eco Friendly House Cleaning Products

More and more people are turning to environmentally friendly (green) products or alternative methods for keeping their homes clean. After all these years of thinking we were actually doing well by purchasing the commercial cleaners we discovered that we actually were exposing our homes and families to toxic and harmful chemicals. Each time we used these cleaning products on our counter tops and in are bathrooms we were exposing ourselves to danger. We might as well let the mold and mildew grow there for all the good we were doing.

Thank goodness more companies are now giving consideration and providing environmentally safe green products for us to use for cleaning. But have you ever thought about the fact that we can make these ourselves with simple products we probably already have in our homes? Just open your kitchen cabinets or pantry and take a look.

You'll probably see one right away and never have really given much to thought to it being used as a cleaner, except for your coffee maker anyway. That's right, white distilled vinegar is a wonderful general all around cleaner. It's naturally acidic and can be used for such things as removing dirt and grime from most of your household surfaces. Remember though to never use it on marble. The acid will damage a marble surface.

Possibly the only rival to white vinegar would be baking soda. Baking soda can be used to clean, deodorize, as a polish and stain remover. As well as even softening fabrics.

Salt is another great abrasive for cleaning such things as pots and pans. Mix equal parts of lemon juice, vinegar and water for a de-clogging solution for your drains.

Club soda can be used to remove stains on clothing as well as some furniture upholstery. Mineral oil can be used for furniture polish and cornstarch can be used to shampoo carpets.

These are but a few choices of environmentally friendly (green) household cleaning products you probably already have on hand. So if you want to go "Green" you don't have to spend a ton of money to do it.

Do Steam Cleaners Work to Eliminate Mold and Mildew?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Mold and mildew is something unavoidable in your house. If there is humidity and moisture, expect to see mold and mildew. However, you can greatly eliminate this problem by using a heavy duty household cleaner like steam cleaners.

Steam cleaners works in such a way that it dissolves mold and mildew. It unseats it effectively from where it has propagated and dissolves it. This does not only work for such organisms, it also works in getting rid of some of the most common household what-nots like viruses, bacteria and germs. Even mud and stains can be removed by this cleaning solution.

Steam works because it is significantly hotter than boiling water. Because of that, it can effectively dissolve just about anything. Many of these gadgets are now available. You can pick from the portable ones to the full-sized ones.

Just fill it up with the required level of water, turn it on and leave it there for a few minutes to heat up and produce steam. Usually, you will only wait for 10-15 minutes for the full-sized cleaners to produce the necessary steam. This will produce 40 to 50 minutes of continuous steam.

The portable ones require just short of 5 minutes heating time and this will produce more than 15 minutes of steam. Direct the nozzle on the area you want to clean and this will remove molds and mildew.

You can use it to get rid of molds from your mattress. A mattress that is not breathable is usually prone to mold formation. The inside of the mattress can produce unwanted molds. If it is not memory foam, you can use this cleaner. Just place the mattress outside and blast it with steam. It is better to use a cleaner that produces dry steam. This way, it cleans but does not leave too much moisture behind. Moisture can even cause more molds and mildew to propagate.

You can do the same for your other furniture. It is better to purchase the dry steam machines. This is also a way for you to eliminate pools of excess water to lessen cleaning time.

Do yourself a favour and purchase a reliable steam cleaner. This comes handy not just in cleaning mold and mildew, it also works well in sanitizing your house at a microscopic level. Choose a good brand and you can experience an easier cleaning time. This way, you can have more time for your other chores.

Best Customer Review : Got mine today and couldn't wait to test it out. Filled with distilled water to about 1/2" under the "max fill" mark. Took around a minute for water to boil. I gotta admit, it's a little scary at first to be toting around this container of furiously boiling water.
Tried it first on an old cotton shirt that I had already stuffed into a corner of the closet, to wrinkle it on purpose. It took a while, and I got the shirt "relaxed" but not "smooth". Aside from a very occasional drop (which evaporated away on the next pass), I didn't have any issues with it spitting hot water.
Next test: a wool blazer, now that I wasn't concerned about spraying boiling water all over it. I used the lint brush attachment, and hey! This thing actually works! It helped to pull the garment taut while steaming. Watch those fingers... I think I saw somebody recommend an using an oven mitt in a review somehere? Not a bad idea. Anyway, this was a success, and pretty easy to do.
Third test: a linen blazer, using the brush attachment. Maybe chalk it up to practice, but it looked perfect in no time. Yay!
In summation: I'm still going to iron shirts that need it, but goodbye drycleaning. It half paid for itself in just a couple of uses. The power cord is nice and long. I don't like that there's no steam trigger, or even an on/off switch... once you plug it in, it's on and steaming. Plus, it leaves garments steam-damp, and you need to let them hang out for 30 minutes or so to dry completely. But overall, it works as promised and saves me money. I'm satisfied withn the purchase and would recommend it to a friend. Hope this helps.

Customer Review 1 : I would buy this again - Amy C. Plummer - Chicago, IL
There have been mixed reviews about this steamer, but I love it! I have tried other styles of steamers but none have worked as well as this one. I have never been interested in the huge commercial steamers with the hose and all, so I have been trying out different types to find one that works well for me.

I used this initially on two dresses, one was silk, the other was chiffon, it took out the wrinkles quickly and easily (literally 3-5 minutes on each garment). I then moved on to my bedroom curtains and had the same result. All with half the water left in the reserve tank. I think it was powerful but gentle on fabric. I would recommend it to any single person who likes to wear an item a few times between dry cleaning trips...I also think it will be great to take on trips because of the compact size. Its easier than ironing, but won't be perfect for everything.

Customer Review 2 : Bad product - eigers - Columbus, OH
The design of this steamer is dumb. It doesn't even have an on/off button and the electric cord isn't very long. I had to plug it into a power strip so I could easily turn it on and off without having to plug and unplug it every time. It worked well for the first few months, but then started leaking water out of the plastic sides or bottom, so water would be leaked out on any surface it was placed. I know this steamer is inexpensive, but I expected it to last longer than a few months.

Best Customer Review : This steamer has no fancy settings and doesn't require an education in steaming to use it. We use ours so much that when I found my mom had an old ineffective steamer she received this as a gift from us. She can now steam quickly and completely without reading directions or fighting with the appliance. We also provided her with the Jiffy steaming mitt which makes steaming easier on the hands...steam is hot after all. We do one garment at a time for wearing immediately so the small water well is perfect and afterward it goes into a drawer....a plus for little storage space. We highly recommend this little steamer to all!

Customer Review 1 : It was okay - G. Lee - BLUE BELL, PA, US
I didn't really get to use it much because the handheld structure wasn't quite convenient. Plus once the steam started coming out there was no stopping unless I unplugged it. It seemed to do an okay job steaming out wrinkles in lighter fabrics but not so with heavier fabrics. The white mineral deposits were bothersome.

Customer Review 2 : The Jiffy does the job - Robin So - California
Bought this from Amazon. Overall, it does what it is meant to do; takes off those wrinkles.

Customer Review 3 : Great Travel Steamer! - Ellen DeRogatis - Boca Raton, FL
I never used a garment steamer, but cruise travelers highly recommended this one. I bought in advance of my cruise and have been using it at home to get a feel for it! Love it. Love it so much I just purchase a Jiffy J-2000 for home. I know this handy little steamer will be great for traveling and does a fabulous job on everything from t-shirts to dress clothes.

Best Customer Review : I bought this iron for Mrs. Spudman to help with a current quilting project of hers. She had bought herself a Darice mini crafting iron because of its conveniently diminutive size and because of its low wattage. However, the lack of steam and its limitations of size and temperature left something to be desired.

When I saw the Steamfast on Amazon and read the reviews, I figured this iron might be exactly what Mrs. Spudman needed. Happily this little wonder has exceeed all expectations. The iron heats up quickly and packs a powerful punch of steam. Just be aware that for large jobs lots of refills may be necessary.

For quilters this little iron is absolutely perfect. It'll eliminate those wrinkles in small fabric pieces, heats up quickly, and save energy with its low 400 watts of power. The Steamfast is also perfect for touchups of single garments or quick freshening of collars, cuffs, or shirt tails. We haven't traveled with SteamFast yet,but based on our experience with it, think it will be a great appliance to take on vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Spudman highly recommend the SteamFast Home & Away steam iron.

Distilled water is recommended for this iron.

Customer Review 1 : Great for my sewing table and more! - D. Moore - El Paso, Texas USA
I put an ironing mat on one end of my sewing table. Now with the help of this wonderful little iron I can press seams, etc. as I sew without having to haul out the big ironing board. I works great for quick clothing touch-ups as well. It is actually fun to use...this from a women who used to dread ironing. :) A++++ product

Customer Review 2 : Meets the need -- adequately - PlainMe -
If you want to pack a full-size iron, it will do a better job. But, the the designed purposes of this iron are to cut down on size and iron. The SteamFast does both well. I don't think an iron with steam could be much smaller. I also like the fact that mine came with a water measuring cup and storage bag that fit into my backpack.

It irons well and provides a decent amount of steam. Due to the size, it does not hold much water. Ironing will take a few minutes longer than with a full-size iron. I had to refill with water after about 3 to 4 shirts.

I will add that this iron does not get as hot as a regular iron does, so if you need the highest temperature settings from your home iron, then this may not meet your expectations.

Customer Review 3 : Handy Little Iron - JDrum - Santa Rosa, CA USA
I am very pleased with the functionality, size and weight of this little iron. I use it for craft and quilt piecing and it does the job. Probably will never travel with it so can't say how it works as a travel iron. Whether you are right- or left-handed you don't have to fight the cord. I recommend it.

Best Customer Review : I just got four new backdrops for my portrait studio...with lots of creases. I was looking a bunch of different steamers online and had no clue what to do...should I just get an industrial steamer? I had no idea. Well, I didn't have enough time to order one and get it in time to use the backdrops for an upcoming shoot, so I called my neighbor to see if he had one. I just got half of a backdrop done using this steamer and it's doing the trick. I've never used one before, so I really have nothing to compare it to. But what I do know is that when I've got several 10ft x 20ft backdrops and this seems to be doing the trick...I'm happy.

It also seems to be easy to handle and stable, which, when working with steam is a must.

In summary, I plan on ordering this very model in the next 24 hours.

Customer Review 1 : Decent but Problematic Steamer (Also, Mold!) - Monkey Bingo - miami beach, florida
For the price, this is a good little steamer. It gets wrinkles out as you would expect... wool is magic, cotton t-shirts are good, button-up cotton shirts retain traces of wrinkles but major wrinkles dissapear. The steamer is easy to fill, though sometimes getting the hose off of the unit is difficult. One problem with the steamer is where to put the paddle when you turn the unit on. Unlike a larger unit, it doesn't mount above the reservoir. You either leave it attached to the unit (not ideal) leave it on the floor, or rig it so it hangs somewhere until the steam starts.

Like many here, I had the gurgling problem. Seems that water collects in the paddle. Before using, I find it useful to shake the paddle so that the excess water falls out, towel off the paddle, then apply to clothing. Also, it is important to make sure that the hose is not kinked, as this also adds to the problem. Occasionally you'll find that the steam is leaking out at the base of the hose, either due to a kinked hose blockage, or the base turning as you use the hose. This creates less steam out of the paddle, and thus more work to get out wrinkles. BTW, the hose is some sort of weak plastic and it will kink at some point despite best efforts to keep smooth.

I can't blame this last bit on the steamer, though it seems quite odd. I went to use the steamer today (I've been using it 5 days a week for the last month or two) and needed to fill it with water. I happened to look inside of the reservoir and noticed that the bit of water that was left in there was cloudy. After pouring it out, I realized that there was a fair amount of mold growing on the bottom of the reservoir. I believe it is growing on the plate that heats the water. So, wow, some extremophile mold. But also, that's it for me and this steamer. Gross!

Customer Review 2 : don't buy this - K. cortez -
I bought this because there were a lot of good reviews, so I expected to get a good outcome. What I got was wet clothes. It just makes your clothes wet, it doesn't remove wrinkles. Yes, the steam is hot, but with all the water droplets coming out of it it doesn't make a good steamer. I held it upright, I always make sure that the hose is straight, but the water just keeps on coming out which makes your clothes wet.

Customer Review 3 : Steamer Flaws - Susie Q - Phoenix, AZ
Bought this for my husband so he could use it on his uniform shirts. He loves it, however, his only complaint is that it takes 20 minutes to heat up. He feels he could iron his shirts faster.Conair GS4 Compact Fabric Steamer

Tobi Steamer Review

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Tobi Steamer uses the same technology as professional dry cleaning companies use to quickly and effectively remove wrinkles.
It is a bit pricey but keep reading to see where you can get yours for 60% Off.

I have LOVED the Tobi. I absolutely hate ironing and have bought clothes that just hung in my closet because I did not want to iron.

The Tobi Steamer is built professionally with a solid feel. Ironing is a daily chore for me and I needed something that was compact and easy to use. The Tobi Steamer will save a lot of time.

* Removes wrinkles from all your clothes - right on the hanger.

* Easily glides right over obstacles - buttons, pockets, sequins and prints.

* Eliminates unpleasant odors - clothes smell laundry-fresh.

* Prevents heat damage - no burning or scorching.

* Works beautifully on all fabrics - with no ripping or tearing.

* Portable - carry it throughout your home to steam clothes, curtains, drapes, upholstery.

* Engineered to last

* Runs on standard AC current - no batteries required.

The only negative points about it are:

The hose is a bit stiff but this is to ensure that there are no kinks in the unit.
The stand is a little wobbly but it will not fall unless you push on it with force.
You may have read some reviews and you are dizzy with contradictions. You might want to consider that a lot of people fail to read the instructions!

I have a feeling that some customer's initial problems with the Tobi are the same they would have with any steamer. Expecting too much, expecting it to replace ironing altogether. You have to give it a chance if you have never used a steamer, it is different then an iron and does take some time to get use to.

I Tried a t-shirt, really really good results. Polo neck shirt, again, impressed. I often avoid ironing these types of garment as they seem more trouble than they're worth, but this did make it relatively fast and with pretty good results. The steam came up as promised and away I went - In less than 10 minutes I had two presentable shirts Bottom line, this is not going to replace the iron for certain things. If I want a very crisp pressed finish, then the iron is the way to go. For other things (shirts, pants, etc) then I'll use the Tobi. It worked really well to refresh work pants where only a few wrinkles need to be eased out after wear, much quicker and easier than an iron.

Happy Steaming!!!
